I Walked 22K Steps in These Birkenstock Sandals

One thing about me: I love Las Vegas. And whenever I get a chance to visit, I love nothing more than slipping on a pair of comfy walking shoes and taking a long, destinationless stroll down the Las Vegas Strip, soaking in the lights and sounds of Sin City. Day or night, with friends or on my own, I love getting out of the vacuum of the windowless casino floors and into the fresh air, catching all of the action taking place outdoors. So I walk as much as possible—even when sanity (and perhaps podiatrists) might recommend a taxi or rideshare app sooner.

Such was the case one day on a recent work trip, when I had several hours free in my itinerary. I began a walk from the Fountainbleu, where I was staying, on the north end of the strip, and decided to walk as far south as my feet could take me. At that point, I’d give my feet a break and call an Uber to get back to my room, all while wearing my Birkenstock Arizona Big Buckle sandals.

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed my walk—and, it so happened, I had a few drinks and won a chunk of change at video poker during pit stops along the way. I was feeling energized the whole way, and my feet were so comfortable that I ended up walking all the way to the South side of the strip… before turning around and walking all the way back. Total step tally for the day? More than 22,000.

It’s a solo travel memory that I cherish dearly to this day, and it’s not lost on me that it was made possible by a brand of shoes I’ve been wearing for decades—just a trendier version.

The Arizona Big Buckle style has, as its name suggests, bigger buckles on both straps in a shiny gold tone, delivering a bolder look in comparison to regular Arizona sandals.

The patent leather straps are both durable and stylish, with a high-shine look that elevates the casual suede versions I used to wear in high school. This shine makes them really pop, but the color I have, Ecru, is a neutral whitish hue that’s still versatile enough to go with anything.

These Arizona sandals have Birkenstock’s signature leather-lined, contoured cork footbed that molds to the shape of your foot the more you walk—about 11 miles with a cocktail in my hand, in this case—and I found that it truly does cradle your foot in the mold of its exact shape.

Of course, these also slip on and off easily, making them perfect for travel days, allowing you to slide them off quickly at TSA security and your airplane seat. Also, there’s no need to adjust the buckles, though you can whenever you like for a tighter, more customized fit. Convenient, comfy, and cute, these Arizona sandals have come with me all over the world, from Japan to France, and all over the Vegas strip.
