These Cooling Hiking Pants Are on Sale

It’s 100 degrees Fahrenheit outside, and people are still hiking… in pants. Why? Because the midsummer sun will give you one heck of a shorts tan line at best, a scorcher of a burn at worst. And because the dog days are high time for insect activity. The only way to avoid becoming a bug buffet is to hit the trails with legs fully covered.

Hot-weather hikers know the struggle and have allocated tons of time and money toward finding materials that achieve the right ratio of weightlessness, breathability, and UV blockage. And they seemed to have discovered all these cooling features in a pair of overlooked Amazon hiking pants half the price of most name brands, according to shoppers (one said they’re just as good as the $100-plus pairs they own).

Toomett Cargo Hiking Pants

The Toomett Cargo Hiking Pants are already a great deal at their regular $49 price, but they happen to be on sale starting at $28 at the exact time when we need them, at the height of the summer hiking season. Made with 90 percent nylon and 10 percent spandex, the pants are “cool and breezy” even when temperatures rise into the triple digits. One reviewer who wore them on vacation in Orlando said the pants kept them “as comfy as one can be in 105 degrees” and likely 80 percent humidity, knowing Florida in the summer.

They offer the highest UPF rating, 50+, which is proven to block at least 98 percent of UVA and UVB rays. This is a crucial quality of summer hiking attire, since sunscreen will only last so long when you’re sweating buckets on a trail. They’ve gotten travelers through trips in some of the hottest, most exposed destinations in the world, from Utah’s Zion National Park to African safaris. A reviewer who called them the “best UV pants ever” said, “They are cooler than any other pants I’ve worn in the summer, and they quickly dry from sweat and water. They’ve been washed at least twice a week for a year and still look great.”

The pants have five zipper pockets—two in the front, two on the thighs, and one on the rear—and drawcords at the hems. The drawcords help you hike the pants up to capris length and block bugs from getting in. This is the selling point for some, including a self-proclaimed insect bite magnet who called them life-changing: “Wearing these blocks my legs from being bitten!”

Many have tested them in the jungle, prime bug territory, and rated them five stars afterward. One jungle hiker wrote that they were “lightweight, easy to pack, comfortable, and attractive.”

Even though the Toomett Cargo Hiking Pants just made their Amazon debut in late May, they have almost 2,000 five-star ratings and are on their way to becoming a best-seller with over 1,000 purchases in the past month. They come in 10 colors, including lake green, blues, and neutrals. They’re available in regular and petite (27-inch) inseams.
