Travelers often overlook tiny European countries, but, as I discovered on a recent trip to Luxembourg—Europe’s seventh-smallest nation, with a population of just 699,000—there’s much to discover in these hidden gems.

Last summer, I visited my aunt, who has lived in Europe for over 20 years, with stints in Paris, Vienna, Zug, Switzerland, and now, Luxembourg. We spent three days touring the historic city nestled between Belgium, Germany, and France. It’s built on a rocky plateau overlooking deep gorges, a sweeping canyon, and surrounding countryside.

Just a three-hour train ride from Paris and easily accessible by other surrounding countries, Luxembourg makes for an effortless weekend getaway from many of Europe’s major hubs. Because of its central location, it’s common to hear English, German, and French used interchangeably, as well as the native language, Luxembourgish. With three to four days to spend in this charming country, the opportunities are endless.

Here, a guide to the inviting cafes, diverse dining, historic castles, and lush forests of Luxembourg just waiting to be explored.

Located near Luxembourg Philharmonic, the 128-room Sofitel Luxembourg Le Grand Ducal is a sleek, convenient home base. Most rooms offer an impeccable view of the city’s narrow gorges, and all have the convenient proximity to its restaurant, M Luxembourg, and bar, L Observatoire.

Villa Pétrusse

Set on the banks of the Pétrusse River across from Edouard André English Park, this 19th-century property, a former private estate, was renovated into the 22-room Villa Pétrusse. Its restaurant, Le Lys, is a highlight, with dishes combining local Luxembourgish cuisine with Asian influences.

Hotel Le Place d’Armes

A Relais & Châteaux property, the 30-room Hotel Le Place d’Armes is the city’s most sophisticated stay. Its restaurant, La Cristallerie, delivers exemplary French cuisine and an unforgettable atmosphere.

Le Royal Hotel

Close to the city’s main square, Le Royal has easy access to nearby attractions, restaurants, and all the other liveliness of an urban epicenter, making it an ideal spot for the adventurous traveler. Not to mention, its wellness club has a fitness facility and on-site spa that includes a hammam, sauna, swimming-pool, and beauty salon.

Bazaar

The gem of Mediterranean cuisine in Luxembourg, Bazaar has a wonderful patio for outdoor seating, as weather allows. My aunt and I thoroughly enjoyed the Mezze Addict, a perfect sharing platter for two.

Drop by Cathedral Notre-Dame.

The centuries-old Cathedral Notre-Dame decorates the city with historical significance and architectural beauty. With free entrance, visitors can wander in and out during a walk through the city center.

Shop at Galeries Lafayette.

Galeries Lafayette is Luxembourg’s hub for all things retail. With a grand selection of brands for men, women, and kids, the multi-floor establishment is great for an afternoon of shopping. When visitors need a break from perusing the shelves, Restaurant SixSeven can be found on the top floor for a tasteful bite with panoramic views of the city.

Get drinks at Liquid.

For beer and cheer, the lively bar Liquid is located right along the Alzette creek next to a scenic viewing point of the city from within the historic canyon. If adventure is brewing, find the hidden elevator back up to the city center level.

See a show at the Luxembourg Philharmonic.

A local phenomenon, the Luxembourg Philharmonic is a theatre offering musical journeys, performances, and showcases. It’s distinctly recognized by its exterior shaped like the instrument of a harp.

Hike the Mullerthal Trail.

If you’re able to rent a car and willing to venture, the nature of “little Switzerland” is waiting to be explored just about 34 minutes beyond city limits. My aunt and I found it incredibly manageable to navigate the Mullerthal Trail and enjoy its winding paths with luscious green forests and waterfalls on every bend.

Visit Vianden Castle.

The architectural masterpiece that is Vianden Castle can be found another 30 minutes north by car from the Mullerthal Trail. Adults can enter for about $15 USD to gaze at one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the romanesque and gothic periods in Europe. The 11th-century fortress, previously privately owned, showcases art, an upper viewing deck, and twisting hallways leading to mysterious nooks.

Best Time to Visit

Buildings along the water on a summer day.

Due to its rainy nature, the best time to visit Luxembourg is during its sunniest season in the summer months from June to July. The country’s royal birthday celebration on July 23 is a particularly good time to plan a trip—festivities include a 21-gun salute, fireworks, and live music. The rest of the year is typically misty and foggy, with temperatures ranging from 37 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you’re willing to brave the cold in November and December, Luxembourg has delightful Christmas markets where one can indulge in the season’s most festive fare.

How to Get There

Luxembourg is easily reached on a three-hour direct train ride from Paris. Travelers can book tickets through SNCF Connect, Omni, or any European train ticket supplier, starting at $60. Other surrounding countries like Germany and Belgium also have access to Luxembourg, but it’s most directly connected to Paris—which makes it a perfect day trip or long weekend excursion during a vacation to the French capital.

If you’re coming in from farther away, Luxembourg has a small airport with Luxair service to just over 100 destinations, including Barcelona, Abu Dhabi, Vienna, and more.

How to Get Around

As of 2020, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Mobility and Public Works declared the country’s public transportation free of charge, which may be one of the most unique qualities of this tiny country. My aunt and I were pleasantly surprised to find the trains and buses to be clean and timely.
