The Tushy Portable Bidet Is Travel Writer-approved

When I went to Rome a few years ago, I discovered the joys of making wishes in the Trevi Fountain and was wowed by the impressive views of the Colosseum and the Pantheon. There was something else wow-worthy that I’d never experienced prior to this trip: a bidet, set up right in my private hotel room bathroom. I was a little hesitant to try it at first, but I decided, “When in Rome.” I was immediately impressed by how effective it was, and soon after, I realized that I’d probably never again feel truly clean again by using just toilet paper.

Just like that, I was sold on bidets after only a couple of uses. I got used to the shower-fresh feeling that using one provides—and now that I knew what I was missing, I wanted to continue feeling that clean. However, I didn’t have the money to invest in a traditional toilet bidet, and as a travel writer, I’m often away from home, anyway. That’s when I discovered the magic of travel-friendly portable bidets. I’ve now tested several options on the market, and so far, my favorite one has been the Tushy portable bidet.

The Tushy portable bidet is easy to hide in plain sight but offers the same powerful spray I’d come to appreciate from traditional bidets. Using public bathrooms can be a necessity when you’ve been traveling for a full day, and I like how this travel bidet is so discreet. It’s collapsible and comes with a mesh carrying case that further disguises it, but even when it’s fully expanded, it looks like it could be a refillable water bottle. It has a water-resistant carabiner hook you can use to attach it to your purse or carry-on backpack (nobody would guess it’s a portable bidet if you carry it in plain sight like that!), and, speaking of discretion, it’s much quieter than other portable bidets I’ve tried.

What I also appreciate about the Tushy travel bidet is how sturdy it is. I’ve used it daily for months now, and it’s held up well the entire time. From being tossed in my checked baggage on a trip to Cincinnati to getting attached to my backpack on a stroll in Costa Rica, it has stayed in pristine condition. It’s also easy to clean, since it has a wider opening compared to other travel bidets.

Pro tip: If you need to use it but don’t have direct access to a sink—or don’t want strangers seeing you fill it up—you can just refill it with a bottle of water while you’re in the bathroom stall, and save some of the water to clean it off with before putting it back in the mesh bag. I also recommend carrying travel-sized soap to keep it clean, plus a small, antibacterial rag to help it dry faster after you’ve cleaned it.

Like fancy, stationary toilet bidets, this portable bidet is versatile. It has an adjustable nozzle with a three-point spout that allows you to angle the stream of water easily. You can also control the pressure of the stream by adjusting how hard you squeeze the bottle. This bidet comes in a variety of fun colors—like fuchsia, bright orange, and teal—so you can match it to your bag or purse, too.

This bidet weighs only 5.3 ounces when it’s empty, so I don’t even notice the extra weight when I have it attached to my backpack. In addition to being lightweight, it folds down to a very small size, a major space-saving plus for trips where I’m traveling with just a carry-on bag.

I’m not the only one who appreciates it, either. It has earned over 700 five-star ratings from other shoppers. One Amazon reviewer called it a “lifesaver,” noting that the ability to compress it down was a bonus since they had limited luggage space. “If you use a bidet and want to have one in a traveling situation, I would definitely recommend this,” they added.

This bidet can also help you stay clean when camping or going on long hikes. When nature calls, you can easily and quickly get clean with this bidet. Since it comes with a discreet mesh carrying case, you can wash it and then put it right in your pack, where it will continue to dry as you go about your hike or trip. “I now consider the Tushy a travel necessity,” wrote one reviewer, adding that it was easy to use in “airport bathrooms, cabin bathrooms, and out on the trail.”

For me, this travel bidet was incredibly useful on airplanes. I am a plus-size traveler, and it can be hard to fit comfortably in an airport bathroom when you have a larger body or mobility challenges. If maneuvering in tight quarters is also difficult for you, this bidet can make all the difference. It helped me feel refreshed, and I was confident that I was maintaining optimal hygiene during all of my adventures.

While I decided that the Tushy portable bidet was the best one for me, it’s hardly the only option on the market. Amazon is stocked with plenty of portable bidet options, all specifically suited for individual needs and preferences. Keep scrolling for more high-quality bidets, starting at just $10.
