This Small West Coast Town Is Perfect for Nature Lovers

The Columbia River Gorge divides Washington and Oregon, and there’s no shortage of magnificent landscapes in this area, from the cool, blue waters of the Columbia River to evergreen trees to rugged basalt mountain cliffs. For those looking for a getaway along the Columbia River, Stevenson, Washington, is it. This hub is home to numerous hiking trails, luxury resort and cabin stays, hot springs, and well-curated shops throughout the downtown core.

Under an hour from Portland, Oregon, Stevenson is best explored by car. The area experiences all seasons, and there’s beauty found during any time of year. Spring provides wildflower hiking, while fall is known for the colorful contrasts of yellow and orange leaves. It’s a beautiful destination year-round, but visiting late spring through early fall offers the best weather and views.

For outdoor adventure, head to Beacon Rock State Park, where you can hike to the top of an 848-foot basalt rock. There are 52 switchbacks on this trail, which was completed in 1918, with panoramic views along the way and an up-close look at the rock’s geological intricacies. Prefer a waterfall hike? Visit Hardy Falls and Pool of the Winds for a moderate trail that’s just over two miles. To make it longer, continue on the same path to the top of Hamilton Mountain. For those not interested in hiking, simply enjoy a walk along the waterfront in town or wander into charming shops.

Right on the edge of the river, there are ample opportunities for swimming, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, kiteboarding, and wing foiling. Bring your own gear or book a lesson or tour. Pedal & Paddle offers a sunset kayak tour to take in glowing river views.

For a more relaxing itinerary, book a mineral water soak in the bathhouse at Carson Hot Springs Resort, which has been providing access to pure hot spring waters since the early 1900s. For a scenic drive and wine tasting, head to AniChe Cellars to try juicy reds and sparkling whites from the female winemaking team, or visit Loop de Loop for wild yeast fermented wines and an expansive view of Mount Hood.

While visiting Stevenson, book a stay in a tree house at Skamania Lodge. Set among towering Douglas fir trees, the luxury tree houses are built 40 feet in the air, with large decks, private outdoor fire pits, and room to sleep up to four. You’ll still have access to the main lodge, along with the opportunity to roam on-site hiking trails, try a zip-line adventure, swim in the indoor pool, soak in the outdoor stone hot tub, and play a round of golf.

Tenzen is an adults-only retreat with modern cabins featuring living areas, queen-size beds, and kitchenettes, but the main highlight is the bathroom and private outdoor hot springs tub. There’s a cedar infinity tub with geothermal mineral water and an outdoor shower on the deck of each cabin.

During your visit, embrace the lore of the area with a stop at Bigfoot Coffee Roasters, an organic micro-batch coffee roaster serving handcrafted lattes and warm grab-and-go breakfast items. For dinner, settle into a seat at the bar at Red Bluff Tap House, a gastropub with a menu featuring house-smoked meats and cheeses incorporated into entrees, along with an extensive tap list highlighting Pacific Northwest-made beer and cider. For waterfront dining, Clark & Lewie’s sits right on the river’s edge, offering an excellent sunset view as you wind down for the day.
