This Tiny European Country Is Home to Emerald-green Lakes, an Under-the-radar National Park, and Alpine Peaks

Tucked between Italy and Croatia in central Europe, Slovenia is a compact country that packs a punch. Despite its size — it’s slightly smaller than New Jersey — the country offers an astounding variety of landscapes. With towering alpine peaks, emerald-green lakes, and sandy beaches, Slovenia is an ideal getaway for travelers who crave variety in a European getaway.

Outdoor activities abound. Go hiking or cycling in Triglav National Park, white-water rafting on the sparkling Soča River, or spelunking in the Postojna Cave system. Catch your breath and try a city break, exploring the historic city of Ljubljana. Here’s my itinerary for an action-packed week.

What to See and Do

Start in Ljubljana, Slovenia’s lively capital, where cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and colorful buildings create an enchanting old-world atmosphere. Stroll along the Ljubljanica River and cross iconic bridges like Dragon Bridge, decorated with dragon statues, and Triple Bridge, designed by renowned architect Jože Plečnik.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to the Central Market, which is packed with stalls selling fresh produce, cheeses, spices, fish, prepared foods, and more. On Fridays from mid-March through the end of October, you must stop by Open Kitchen, a street food market with vendors from all over Slovenia.

For a nice day trip, go to Predjama Castle, perched atop a sheer cliff. Dating back to the 13th century, this fortified castle is integrated into the caves beneath it, where you can explore the stalactites, stalagmites, and hidden rivers with a guide.

Visit Triglav National Park to see magnificent views of the Julian Alps, Slovenia.

The next day, you can head north to Triglav National Park for endless outdoor activities. Get acquainted with the spectacular alpine scenery and ride mountain bikes through picturesque villages. Or enjoy leisurely hikes along the Mostnica Gorge trail, and marvel at its towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and tranquil pools.

You can also spend a day visiting Bled, the iconic postcard-worthy town on Lake Bled. Board a traditional wooden boat to visit the almost 900-year-old Church of Mary’s Assumption, perched on tiny Bled Island. Hike around the lake or take a dip if it’s warm enough. Add a side trip to Vintgar Gorge for views of the looming cliffs and rushing Radovna River.

Next up, get ready for an adrenaline rush with a rafting trip on the turquoise Soča River. The wild rapids take you under the towering peaks of the Julian Alps, some of Europe’s most breathtaking scenery.

With more time, you’ll want to explore the Goriska Brda wine region, known as the Tuscany of Slovenia, and go truffle hunting on the Istrian Peninsula.

Where to Stay

The five-star Zlata Ladjica boutique hotel offers a unique stay in the heart of Ljubljana’s Old Town. Located along the Ljubljanica River in one of the city’s oldest buildings, it has 15 individually decorated rooms. The InterContinental, meanwhile, has 165 contemporary rooms and suites, as well as wonderful views of the city and the river.

Luxurious views can be seen at Boutique Hotel & Restaurant Milka, Kranjska Gora, Slovenia.

Outside the city, accommodations are typically alpine in style, with knotty wooden furniture, hearty meals, and scenic vistas. The five-star Milka, a boutique property in the heart of the Julian Alps, is a fantastic option, with jaw-dropping mountain views and a Michelin two-starred restaurant.

In Triglav National Park, four-star properties like Sunrose 7 and Hotel Bohinj offer easy access to the area’s incredible adventures.

When to Go

Spring and summer offer the best weather for hiking, biking, and exploring Slovenia’s abundant natural beauty. Autumn, with its vibrant foliage (not to mention fewer crowds), is also a fantastic time to visit. For those seeking winter sports including skiing, snowboarding, or ice climbing, December to February is ideal.
