Bitcoin Price Left Behind? Record Global M2 Could Put BTC on a Launchpad

Key Takeaways

Global M2 Blows Through Record Territory

Just like the global debt, the money supply (M2) is growing enormously. The United States M2, which basically is a measurement of all the money circulating in the American economy, tapped a record high of $23.16 trillion. Combining all the major countries and regions, including the United States, the Eurozone, China, and Japan, the global M2 measurement stood at roughly $103 trillion.

In essence, M2 equates to cash plus money held in highly liquid accounts and market observers monitor it because expanding money can cause different outcomes. For instance, excess capital could be leveraged for precious metals, equities, cryptocurrencies, and assets that investors seek for better returns. Some M2 estimates are higher, like Crossborder Capital’s Michael Howell suspects the number is closer to $195 trillion.

Bitcoin’s Price Rip Reopens the Liquidity Trade

The latest bitcoin price move has basically brought global M2 back into the discussion. After reaching a weekly high above $81,000, BTC has been exchanging hands for $78,250 to $79,500 over the last 24 hours. At the start of August, BTC was around the $63,000 range and spiked considerably after the U.S. Treasury’s bond buyback announcement. Despite such a spectacular run-up, bitcoin’s price is still around 37% below the October 2025 all-time high above $126,000.

The gap between global M2 and bitcoin’s price could present a “catch-up” trade. This is because BTC’s supply is fixed and contained at 21 million, whereas governments worldwide can print fiat at will. The bet is basically that governments will continue to flood the financial system, and scarce assets like bitcoin will be targeted. At the same time, historical bitcoin price cycles make this trade a reality.

Bitcoin’s price saw a massive run-up in 2017-2018 and again in 2020-2021. These bullish cycles coincided with the expansion of M2 and liquidity. At the same time, the government’s tightening conditions that followed have led to bearish cycles. On the other hand, new capital can be held in bank deposits and money-market funds for quite some time. If the greenback grows stronger with reliable interest rates, specific cash parking spots are favored. Liquidity can remain choked off for a while until it reaches assets like gold, stocks, or bitcoin.

The Dollar Could Make or Break Bitcoin’s Catch-Up

Over the last year, many market observers believed the relationship between bitcoin and M2 was broken. That’s because global M2 continued to rise while bitcoin’s price took a massive downturn from the October high. Basically, liquidity expanded, and BTC’s momentum dropped, and it is safe to assume that brand new greenbacks remained buried in cash-friendly investments.

Some observers, including Ash Crypto on X, think bitcoin’s long-awaited catch-up with M2 may finally be taking shape. “M2 global liquidity has hit an all-time high,” Ash Crypto wrote on X. “Bitcoin’s catch-up rally may have just started,” he added. At the same time, the U.S. dollar has given BTC a bit of breathing room. Data measuring greenbacks show the U.S. Dollar Index slumped this month while assets like gold and bitcoin spiked.

At its core, a weaker dollar puts pressure on the cash-friendly parking spots and nudges holders to move. A real test awaits in the backdrop as market watchers will be watching the U.S. M2, global M2, and flows into specific funds. Treasury yields will also play a role as the return of the liquidity trade could appear within the next few weeks to months.

The takeaway from all of this is the fact that, despite people’s hopes, a record-setting global M2 does not automatically equate to higher bitcoin price targets. However, if the liquidity keeps barreling toward the financial system, the greenback remains soft, and capital flows into alternative assets like bitcoin and precious metals, the game of catch-up may happen sooner than people think. A reversal of such conditions could bring the opposite too.
